Preserved beauty...

Of all the museums visited over the years, I had never been to The Cloisters in Fort Tryon Park, New York until today. This branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art is devoted to the art and architecture of Medieval Europe. Propped on a hilltop with commanding views of the Hudson River, The Cloisters is designed in a style evocative of medieval architecture especially for the display of masterpieces created during that era, featuring works primarily from Western Europe including sculpture, limestone carvings, stained glass, tapestries, painting, manuscripts, and metalwork. The open courtyard and extensive gardens feature medieval plantings too, enhancing the reverent surroundings. In honor of The Cloisters 75th anniversary and embracing the well-known tapestries in the collection, Search for the Unicorn is the current exhibit on display until August 18th exploring the quest for this magical, elusive being as believed to exist from the Middle Ages through the Renaissance. As we wandered through the museum, I was amazed realizing the knowledge of historical accuracy required to collect such treasures inhabiting the halls and chapels within. It was a truly inspiring trip...

It may be a beautiful summer day outside, but it was refreshing to take a step back in time, appreciating preserved beauty, in any season, within the walls of The Cloisters... xoxo-Sonya
