Creating beauty from something broken...
The first time I encountered the art of mosaics, my daughter was nine. We still remember that cool, rainy summer day. The beach wasn't an option. After a quick online search for fun things to do, I happened upon a place out in Greenbrook, New Jersey to spend some craft time painting ceramics and assembling mosaics. It took us over an hour to drive there, but it was worth the ride... It was love at first shard!
This new endeavor became a passion. Ever since, I have created dozens of pieces for friends and family, as well as special orders for those who come teary eyed, broken keepsake in their hands, seeking resurrection in something new to maintain its spirit.
My latest project was an older wood coffee table, weathered from years of homage by crayons, hot teacup rings and scuffing keys. Centering a kept ceramic tile rescued from a garage sale years ago, I coordinated leftover bathroom tiles nipped into puzzle pieces around it. With just enough broken shards from wounded dinner plates, the green and white border fit snugly around the edge, adding contrast to the soft salmon of the tile.
All the pieces needed to be glued into place after assembling them in the best fit on the tabletop, just like a puzzle.
Once the glue set, then came the messy part - the grouting!
Cured and sandy from the dried grout, polishing the surface and later sealing the grout took time, since the piece was so big... but the result is so beautiful!
All finished!
Several other project await to be set and grouted... Patience, patience...
Something beautiful can always be created from something broken...
One piece at a time... xoxo-Sonya
